One of the most effective ways for kids to understand money is for them to make some money of their own. Not only will it will help them to understand the process of making money, but they will not take money for granted and will be more careful with how they spend it. If the child needs to go to someone’s house to work, it is never ever a good idea to send a child to a stranger’s house alone.

Here are 10 ideas for kids to make money and learn the value of a dollar.

1. Yard Work
It doesn’t have to be really intensive labor, but if there are elderly neighbors who can’t do things like rake leaves and weed flowers, this would be an ideal job for kids. For teenagers, they could also cut grass and shovel snow, when applicable.

2. Baking
Baking can be a fun and easy way for kids to make extra money. They can make cookies, candies, cupcakes, etc. and friends and neighbors will be more than happy to support this type of entrepreneurial venture.

3. Pet Daycare
A lot of pet owners would love to find someone to watch their pets during the day. This may be a great summer job for kids since they will be out of school during the day. If your house is a pet friendly environment, pet owners can drop their best friends off and allow your child to watch them.

4. Paid chores
Although most kids already pitch in and help with chores around the house, sometimes paying them to do additional chores can be a fun way for them to look forward to helping and earn a little extra money in the process. Make sure to randomize these paid chores so they won’t take this luxury for granted.

5. Jewelry Making
Almost every child has made a friendship bracelet or some type of jewelry. Now they can turn that fun pastime into a job and see that their hobbies can actually make them money.

6. Lemonade and Fruit Stand
The classic lemonade stand is a business that every child should try. And to add a unique touch, kids can sell fruits like apples and oranges in addition to lemonade. If they buy a bag of fruit and sell each piece for a dollar or a dollar fifty, they can make quite the profit.

7. Home Nail Salon
This is a great business for teenage girls. They could invite friends, relatives and neighbors over to get manicures and pedicures.

8. Woodworking
For an older child who is skilled in the art of working with wood, they can make and sell custom wood pieces such as picture frames, birdhouses or whatever they have an interest in making.

9. Arts and Crafts.
This could include: flower arrangements, panting, crocheting, knitting, etc. They could even consider taking custom orders to ensure that their customers always get exactly what they are looking for.

10. Personal Motivation Reminder
Have you ever noticed how kids can be very persistent and persuasive? Well now they can use those skills to motivate people to keep goals. Whether their “clients” want exercise, appointment or bill pay reminders, this is the perfect job for that detail oriented child.

Encourage your child to be creative and come up with additional ways they could make money, and they will have fun with the process.
